Susan Mitchinson - “I believe”
The Art career of Susan Mitchinson in Namibia spans over
twenty-three years. This is not her first
exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Namibia. Susan
Mitchinson’s latest artworks will be exhibited from 22nd
July to 17th August 2008 at the National Art Gallery
of Namibia.
Susan’s art work are of a quality that is, sufficiently dominant
and is characterized by the paintings and prints, that reflects
the presence of energy. Her work takes a variety of forms such
as wind, heat, motion and all expressed through undulating brush
strokes of rich, colour that gives her works a fluctuating and
mesmerizing appearance.
The visual impact is suggestive of the nature of the universe
where everything is continually in a motion: Susan’s paintings
and prints mirror our own unending human restlessness, as we
search for material comfort and the spiritual or emotional
fulfilment. Our own nature lies in movement. Susan’s work has
mobility and calmness which is desirable and resembles life
hence the joy we derive from the energy of her style. Not only
does she show nature and life but also how this nature and life
is perceived.
Note: There are times when history of quality art should be told
to the public. Susan’s work is among others like Giotto, Paolo
Uccello, Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh and Matisse. If Authors can
publish the World of Titian why not the World of Susan for the
future of our generation.
Bittersweet Chocolate: Moment of time, seem to be moving either
literally or unexpectedly as in (bittersweet chocolate). When
the viewer is drawn into Susan’s work a gentle breeze blows: it
is safe to hang around her work and feel the spirit of life and
nature. In many of her works she projects animals and people as
the unchanging aspect of life: stable, solid and dependable. The
artworks celebrate the resilience of a woman as she copes with
the positives and negatives of life.
As Hans-Christian Mahnke
said it so well that, “Susan’s work introduces mood and
emotions”. Art is a channel of communication and expression. In
communication thoughts and ideas are transferred from one mind
to another either in speech, recording and by written word.
Surely indeed, there is a riot of colour which speaks to the
heart in her artworks.
Susan is generally well known for her black and white prints,
but this upcoming exhibition will expose the viewer to colourful
exuberant paintings and even jewellery design by herself. Each
jewellery piece is exclusive and individual. They are cast in
silver and made by the African Art Jewellers, Swakopmund.
The theme “I believe” is so appropriate to the artist herself,
because her dedication and commitment certainly convince us that
she believes in herself, in what she is doing and also in the
existence of humanity.
